Quest 3 & Vision Pro Cost Breakdowns Show Real Business Plans Of Meta & Apple

Quest 3 Breakdown (Image Courtesy: UploadVR & Wellsenn XR)

Wellsenn XR, a China-based XR analysts firm has revealed the estimated production costs of Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro's production, demonstrating a stark contrast in their manufacturing expenses, business goals and vision for the future.

The Quest 3's most expensive component, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, costs around $90, with the total component cost estimated at $400. The final cost, including production, is around $430 for a device that retails for $499.

However, keep in mind that manufacturing cost is only a portion of a device’s total costs, as other expenses like R&D, and marketing are also included before calculating the profit. For reference, the iPhone 15 Pro costs $558 to manufacture and is sold for $1199 in the US. Do you know what that means? Meta is heavily subsidising the Quest 3!

In contrast, Apple Vision Pro's costs slightly over $1700. That’s crazy because the Vision Pro starts at $3499. The most expensive parts are the near-4K OLED microdisplays, costing a staggering $350 each. This means that even the display costs more than an entire Quest 3.

Basically, Apple is looking to make a profit from day 1 but Meta is still waiting for mass adoption first before monetizing, a strategy that worked well for them with Facebook and Instagram.

BLACK FRIDAY DEALS

Big Discounts Coming To The Metaverse!

Meta's Black Friday deal for the Quest 2 is a steal! After a recent price cut to $250 for the 128GB model and $300 for the 256GB model, Meta is offering an additional $50 credit on purchase.

This deal effectively values the Quest 2 at just $200. The credit form varies depending on the purchase platform, like Amazon Credit or Quest Store credit. Alongside this, the Quest Store is hosting a Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale, offering up to 40% off on many titles, including Beat Saber and its DLC tracks.

Notable games like Demeo, Iron Man VR, Resident Evil 4, Five Nights at Freddy's, Dungeons of Eternity, Red Matter 2, Pistol Whip, Among Us VR, Floor Plan 2, and Drop Dead: The Cabin are also part of the sale. To avail of the discounts, use the code BFCM23 at checkout.

If you’re confused about which game to buy at a discount, I’m personally stoked about Red Matter 2’s price cuts. If you have a Quest 3, I’d suggest the same as it’s the best-looking title so far that makes full use of Q3’s graphical upgrades.

VISION PRO

Vision Pro Release To Get Delayed But Apple Is Still On Track To Keep Their Promise

Apple's highly anticipated Vision Pro mixed reality headset has faced another delay, pushing its launch to around March 2024 from earlier reports of January 2024. However, Apple never officially gave out a release date and only said “early 2024”, which means even with the delays, Apple is still on schedule. Meanwhile, visionOS is expected to be complete by January.

The Vision Pro, which is the most complex device Apple has ever worked on, has been in development for over a decade, leveraging early ARKit software research. Apple's long-term goal is to miniaturize the Vision Pro's components for a glass form factor.

The delay is attributed to logistics and the need for custom fitting and training at Apple Stores. Security is also an issue as a stolen Vision Pro costs Apple 3 times more than a stolen iPhone.
